The Carrie Chassin and Jochen Haber Legacy Fund
Carrie Chassin was born April 5th, 1947 to Michael and Sally Honig in Manhasset NY. She attended Manhasset High School on Long Island, New York graduating in 1964 and attended Boston University, graduating in 1968 majoring in Urban Planning.

Carrie took her interest in government and how cities work to Los Angeles in 1973.

She worked in City Hall as a deputy to legendary Los Angeles City Councilman Marvin Braude who was a leading environmentalist of that era creating thousands of acres of preserved parkland around the City of Los Angeles. Carrie was active in Democratic city and state politics notably supporting the successful mayoral campaign of Tom Bradley, who became the first African American mayor of Los Angeles.

Following the dissolution of her first marriage to Mark Chassin in 1974, she met Jochen Haber while swimming in the UCLA swimming pool with friends and after dating for several years, were married in 1982. This kicked off a 45 year romance filled with global travel and adventure. Their adventures took them from SCUBA diving in the South Pacific, to bare back sailing trips in Australia, to regularly flying Jochen’s plane down to remote beaches in Baja, Mexico, exploring Japan multiple times, and traveling through all parts of Europe.

After leaving City Hall, Carrie served as a public relations and communications executive for decades first at the Exxon Corporation and then at Winner & Associates where she led state and local campaigns for clients as varied as the Bechtel Corporation and Native American tribes across the United States.

One of these engagements turned out to be more impactful than the rest as she met a young Alison Abbott who was then a communications executive working for the Bechtel Corporation. Alison and Carrie worked together in the trenches of local politics to get a large liquified natural gas project approved by voters in east San Francisco Bay. While the project was ultimately unsuccessful, Carrie was successful in introducing Alison to her son Adam while Alison was on a trip to New York. The rest is history and Alison and Adam were married in Italy in 2005.

Carrie was a force of nature who built decades-long friendships in multiple areas of her life. She built monthly dinner clubs, books clubs, margarita clubs, women’s discussion groups many of which have continued for over 40 years. Parties at her house were regular occurrences and she transformed her backyard into a horticultural paradise with many weddings, engagement parties and other celebrations regularly occurring there.

As a fifty three year resident of Los Angeles, Carrie was a proud patron of the arts providing early support to now world renown LA-based sculptor Brad Howe and many other artists whose art still adorns the inside and outside of her home. Carrie served as a board member of the Fountain Theater in Hollywood and she and Jochen held decades long subscriptions to the major LA theaters, chamber orchestras and museums.

After retiring, Carrie became a proficient artist herself with a focus on painting and sculpting. She took courses with the legendary Italian sculptor Bruno Lucchesi and her works are prominently displayed in her art-filled home.

Her three grandchildren Elle, Ethan and Andrew were a constant source of joy for her and from their birth exposed them to her passions of art, theater, books, and nature. Time spent on the beach in Santa Monica, at the landmark Children’s Bookstore in West LA and creating art in her art studio at home were particular favorites. Later in life even when struggling with ovarian cancer, she was determined to show her grandchildren the world and organized trips to Belize and the Galapagos Islands and even accompanied the family on a trip to Kenya, Africa.

Carrie is survived by her loving husband Jochen Haber, her son Adam, daughter-in-law Alisonand her three grandchildren Elle, Ethan and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to support the Fountain Theater in Hollywood where Carrie served on the board. We have created a fund which will provide on-going support to the Fountain’s mission to bring unique and diverse theatrical productions to Los Angeles.
