Annual Appeal 2019
Thank you for helping us create My Park, My Pool, My City — a trilogy of dances celebrating city pools and their people. In collaboration with the Aquatics Division of Austin’s Parks & Recreation Department and the communities of Bartholomew, Dove Springs, and Givens pools, we shared with thousands of people the rich history and culture of these communities and the significance of pools as gathering places. The dances highlighted the vital work of lifeguards, the care and attention of the Aquatics maintenance staff, and the love of community members ages 5 to 95.
This project was a resounding success because of the generous support and selfless participation of all who took a leap of faith with us. Will you help us continue to change civic conversation and shine a light on the people who help vitalize our lives and our communities?

Three years ago, we embarked on our most ambitious civic project yet: My Park, My Pool, My City, a multi-year collaboration with Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department Aquatic Division and several East Austin neighborhoods. Featuring lifeguards, Aquatic Maintenance staff, and neighborhood pool users, the project amplifies civic engagement, addresses equity, and impacts city policy through a collaborative creative process.
Featuring maintenance staff, lifeguards, and community residents old and new, Givens Swims is set to premiere in July 2019 at Givens Neighborhood Pool. The pool was built in 1958 for the black community of East Austin in an area that is currently facing rapid gentrification and displacement. Through interviews, community gatherings, and performance, Givens Swims will gather and share the stories of pool users past and present. We will celebrate the rich history surrounding this cultural treasure as the neighborhood begins to vision the future of its pool
We couldn’t make our shows free and accessible to all without the generosity of our patrons who are able to give. Please consider making a donation of any size to support the work of Forklift Danceworks!
