Creating Other Worlds: Scifi Writing Workshops with Lou Cornum
Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 1:30PM

Abrons Art Center, Room 201
466 Grand Street
New York, NY 10002

Advanced technology without precious mineral mining. Interstellar travel without military funding. Alien life forms in mushroom bodies. This workshop in science fiction (SF) thought and writing will explore images and speculations at the limits of genre. We will meet in three sessions over three weeks culminating in a day of sharing work and idea exchange about the social and political uses of other worlds. The course of each session will be focused loosely on the following prompts: What is SF and Why?; Imagining the Impossible; and World Building for the Dispossessed. Each session will involve a short introduction to the prompt in the history and context of SF (with an emphasis on work by Indigenous and POC authors), reading a brief work or excerpt of SF, writing our own SF beginnings/fragments and workshopping these with the group. Participants can come to one, two, or all of the sessions and previous attendance is not required to join a later session.
