Why Would I Dare: The Trial of Crystal Mason

Conceived and Directed by Tyler Thomas Sound

Featuring Crystal Dickinson, Peter Gerety, Peter Mark Kendall, and Shane McRae.

Production Designer You-Shin Chen

Design by Megumi Katayama

Striving to rebuild her life after prison, Crystal Mason -a Black American woman and mother- attempted to vote in the 2016 election but was arrested and accused of casting a fraudulent vote. Unaware that she was stripped of her right to vote while on parole, Crystal was shoved back into the courts as neighbors testified against her newfound freedom. Even though her ballot was never counted, Texas courts chose to make an example out of her and sentenced her to five more years in prison. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, in partnership with The Commissary and The New Neighborhood, is proud to present a virtual reading of her trial as she fights for her freedom, her family, and the ever-growing right to vote.
