Tomás and The Library Lady tells the true story of a nine-year-old Tomás Rivera, the son of Mexican migrant workers. In the summer of 1945 he and his family follow the crops north from Texas to Iowa, spending long days in the fields and gathering at night to hear Grandfather’s wonderful stories. But before long, Tomás knows all the stories by heart. “There are more stories in the library”, Papa Grande tells him. The very next day, Tomás meets the library lady and a whole new world opens up for him. Tomás takes his education into his own hands and develops a lifetime love of reading and writing. Based on the true story of the Mexican-American author and educator Tomás Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on the become the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system, this inspirational story suggests what libraries—and education—can make possible. Adapted for the stage by José Cruz Gonzáles from the children’s book of the same title, written by El Paso born and UTEP graduate Pat Mora.

A pre-recorded production available for 3 days (Fri., 3/12/21 - Sun., 3/14/21) via Vimeo. Estimated run-time of this production is 50 minutes.
