In the story, an eccentric musical theatre devotee who plays the record album of his favorite musical for the audience, with ongoing wry commentary, of a fictional show is called The Drowsy Chaperone, a supposed hit of 1928. The musical comes alive in his apartment, which is transformed into the settings for the singing and dancing characters who appear in a tale of love and stardom.
