In September 2020, a group of artists assembled in a barn in Wisconsin to stage a puppet play. The setting provided a controlled environment that allowed all participants to observe strict COVID-19 protocols. Vancouver is the result of that experiment.

A mixed-race family relocates from Japan to the Pacific Northwest, hoping to find more stability. Or, maybe, acceptance?

But where is home exactly?

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ma-Yi Theater Company has made all of its digital content free to the public while paying all artists involved. This is key to our goal of providing much needed employment to theater makers, and access to theater for communities that have traditionally been excluded from participating because of distance, or economic constraints. We believe this is key to the transformation of a post-pandemic theater landscape that is both radically inclusive and accessible.

You can help us continue to bring arts to underserved communities by making a donation of as little as a dollar.

Thank you.

Year End 2022
Dear Friend and Patron of Ma-Yi Theater Company

Thank you for your continued support of Ma-Yi Theater.

This past year we produced two Off Broadway productions: Lloyd Suh’s “The Chinese Lady” in partnership with The Public Theater, and Daniel K. Isaac’s “Once Upon A (korean) Time.”

Our production of “The Chinese Lady” received five Drama Desk, four Lucille Lortel Award, and Outer Critics Circle Nominations. For her performance in Chinese Lady, Shannon Tyo won a Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Performance, and a Theater World Award.

“Once Upon A (korean) Time” received glowing reviews and was embraced by AAPI audiences. This is especially notable because it is Daniel’s playwriting debut.

In tandem with these productions, Ma-Yi hosted nine public forums on Anti-Asian Violence, featuring community leaders and activists working to educate communities on cultivating safety for all.

In June, we partnered with Second Generation Productions to organize “Short Stack,” a festival of short plays featuring ten playwrights, five directors, and thirty-five performers. It was a celebration of our community’s talents and an opportunity for young, emerging Asian American artists to show what they can do.

And so here we are at the end of another year.

We cannot continue our work without your support. Will you consider donating any amount to Ma-Yi Theater Company? Rest assured that we will continue to work hard to earn your support by lifting Asian American theater artists and celebrating the richness of our many cultures.

Year End 2023

Dear Friend and Patron of Ma-Yi Theater Company,

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your unwavering support and reflect on the journey Ma-Yi Theater Company took in 2023.

Your support allowed us to continue our commitment to centering and uplifting Asian American voices. We commissioned a new play from Michi Barall, and a new musical from Lloyd Suh and Diana Oh. We developed new plays by Lisa Sanaye Dring, Seayoung Yim, David Zheng, Haruna Lee, and Jesse Jae Hoon. Our production of “Wolf Play,” with MCC Theater and Soho Rep received five Lucille Lortel Awards, including one for Outstanding Play, and “Once Upon a (korean) Time” was nominated for a Lucille Lortel and Henry Hewes Award for design.

We gathered over fifty emerging Asian American artists to present a sold-out run of “Short Stacks 2,” featuring five directors, nine playwrights, and forty performers and designers. For many of them, it was their first gig in New York City. Relatives of the cast flew in from other states to witness their loved one’s debut.

Here is what we are looking forward to in 2024:

1. Elevate AANHPI Voices: Ma-Yi Theater is bringing Lisa Sanaye Dring’s acclaimed play “SUMO,” to New York City in 2024. This radical reimagining of the ancient, hyper masculine Japanese sport is given a fresh take from a woman’s perspective. Ma-Yi premiered this play in a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse in October 2023.

2. Foster Talent: We will continue developing new works by AANHPI playwrights, including a new play commission to an emerging writer.

3. Expand Outreach: Community engagement remains a top priority for Ma-Yi Theater, and in 2024, we are planning to present Jesse Jae Hoon’s Lehrstücke or “Learning Play,” in site specific locations in Chinatown and Flushing, Queens. Jesse developed these plans while immersed in working communities in Chinatown and Flushing, tackling issues of homelessness, food shortage, and the lack of adequate healthcare for the Asian and South Asian communities.

As with all grand visions, bringing this to life requires resources. And that's where you come in.

As we gear up for another chapter, we humbly seek your support.

Your year-end donation will not just fund a play; it will empower a voice, ignite a dream, and cement our place in shaping the future narrative of American theater.

Donate today below. Your support, be it big or small, will play a starring role in our 2024 saga.

Let's embrace the magic, the passion, and the transformative power of theater once again.

Together, we can make the stage come alive in ways we've only dreamt of.

With immense gratitude,
Ralph B. Peña

Year End Appeal 2024
Dear Friend and Patron of Ma-Yi Theater Company,

As we approach the end of an incredible year, Ma-Yi Theater Company is thrilled to announce two groundbreaking productions that exemplify our commitment to centering AANHPI voices and narratives. We invite you to join us in bringing these unique theatrical experiences to life.

SUMO by Lisa Sanaye Dring, directed by Ralph B. Peña, immerses audiences in the intense world of Japanese sumo wrestling. This gripping drama follows two wrestlers on the brink of stardom as they navigate the pressures of tradition, masculinity, and ambition. SUMO delves deep into the human spirit, exploring what it truly means to fight for one's place in the world.

RHEOLOGY, created and performed by Obie Award-winning writer/director Shayok Misha Chowdhury in collaboration with his mother, physicist Bulbul Chakraborty, is a performance memoir that intertwines science and art. Chakraborty's expertise in rheology—the study of how matter flows—serves as a metaphor for the fluid dynamics of family, culture, and identity. This innovative piece blends poetic songs by Bengali composer Rabindranath Tagore with personal narratives, offering a profound exploration of how things flow in both the physical and emotional realms.

Your support is invaluable in allowing Ma-Yi Theater Company to continue its mission of uplifting AANHPI lives and artists. In a time when diverse stories are more vital than ever, your contribution helps us create spaces where these narratives can thrive and resonate with audiences far and wide.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community. Together, we can bring these powerful stories to the stage and ensure that AANHPI voices are heard and celebrated.

With immense gratitude,
Ralph B. Peña
Producing Artistic Director of Ma-Yi Theatre Company
