To Protect, Serve, and Understand
In 2015, Irondale invited the New York Police Department to join them in developing a community program that would use theatrical improvisation to build communication and empathy between officers and the communities they are charged to protect and serve.
Every season, our cast of community members and police officers join founding members and facilitators Terry Greiss, Rivka Rivera, and Michael-David Gordon for 10 weeks of improvisational training, in which they learn and apply the tools of the actor to be heard, bear witness to others’ perspectives, and spotlight needed change.
The workshops culminate in original and spontaneous public performances that show what can come from mutual trust and empathetic understanding.
Irondale, Where the Process is the Play

At Irondale, we believe that "the process is the play," as American Theatre Magazine aptly described us. As we embark on our next chapter, we're excited to invite you, our audience, to step inside the Irondale process and become a part of the creative journey with us.

We're thrilled to announce our upcoming venture: a reading series dedicated to plays we believe have been unjustly overlooked, dismissed, or misunderstood. This series is a bold leap into the unknown, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Our series kicks off with Thornton Wilder's Skin of Our Teeth on October 7th, followed by Arthur Miller's I Can't Remember Anything on November 4th, and concludes with Tennessee Williams' A House Not Meant to Stand on December 9th. These performances are open to the public on a Donate-What-You-Wish basis, allowing everyone to experience the magic of theatre. Your support, whether big or small, makes a significant impact on our work.

This series is the latest step in our over 40 years of artistic exploration, deeply rooted in the revolutionary improvisational techniques of Viola Spolin and Paul Sills, and our passion for the art of playwriting.

Each play will undergo three days of intensive exploration, and you're invited to witness this unique blend of improvisation and dramaturgy. After each rehearsal, we'll host a special Zoom Debrief exclusively for members of Irondale's new membership program, the Director's Circle, where we'll share the day's discoveries and insights.

Join us on this exciting journey as we continue to push the boundaries of theatre and storytelling.
