San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company
As an SFBATCO supporter, you are an integral part of cultivating an organization dedicated to enriching the San Francisco Bay Area. Your donation helps subsidize our ticket prices, keeping our programs financially accessible while still allowing us to pay artists what they are worth.  As a tax exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all gifts made to SFBATCO are tax deductible. We cannot do what we do without you, and we deeply appreciate your generosity.
The Day the Sky Turned Orange
The Day the Sky Turned Orange is a soulful, House, R&B musical that helps us confront and make sense of our collective fear of the climate crisis, inspired by the lived experience of those in the Bay Area on Sept 9, 2020. That day the sky in San Francisco turned a troubling shade of amber, as ash rained down due to thousands of wildfires spreading across the state.

Amidst the loudness and pressing matters of the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, the upcoming presidential election, this fateful day barely made the news. The earth is mighty, but not boastful. The day the sky turned orange humbly and quietly passed us all by.

So, what can we do? As artists, it’s our job to open up a conversation. It’s our job to entertain, educate, and enlighten, while reflecting the current issues of our times. We feel strongly that through music that resonates with us, and stories that reflect us, we can inspire change.

And why shouldn’t music about change be on the radio, again?

The real question should not be, “why this project now?”

The question should be, “If not now, when?”

A biting dark comedy about loss, grief, and the wars we wage in family, Arab Spring follows Yusef, a recovering addict and Dina, his controlling big sister, who return on the 4th of July to their childhood home in the suburbs to bury their deadbeat Dad. As they rush to pull off an Islamic burial before his body goes cold, they’re forced to confront who their estranged father really was and what family means … hopefully, without killing each other.

Join SFBATCO for the world premiere of Every Saturday Night: A Harlem of the West Musical by creator, composer and co-writer Danny Duncan and playwright Michael Gene Sullivan.


Inspired by true events, prepare to be transported to San Francisco’s Fillmore District—beginning in the present day, where the echoes of a once-thriving Black neighborhood still shape the streets. From there, Every Saturday Night pulls audiences back into the 1950s, the vibrant “Harlem of the West,” when the Fillmore pulsed with jazz, community, and possibility.
